Reception

Welcome to Butterfly and Ladybird Class

Reception Meet and Greet Reception LeafletReception Curriculum Overview

In Reception we follow the Early Years curriculum. Through this curriculum we are able to offer your child a broad spectrum of play based learning opportunities.

At the beginning of the year we spend time settling the children in so they can learn the new rules and routines of being in Reception. Once the children are settled and happy in their new environment we begin learning about our first Power of Reading book: ‘So Much’ by Trish Cooke. During this topic we will be talking about families, looking at our own families and learning about many different ways of being a family.

Throughout the year we will focus on a different book every few weeks, and we will base our indoor and outdoor learning on this particular topic. We use a range of fiction and non-fiction texts in different styles to help develop a love of reading.

In Maths we will be following the White Rose Curriculum for Reception, which is a progressive programme that builds on children’s previously learnt maths skills. Initially, children will become confident with the composition of different numbers to 10. They will learn simple addition and subtraction and develop their mathematical problem solving skills. Are also following the NCETM program, which involves an additional 5 minute maths lesson daily, which is often linked to CBeebies’ Numberblocks.

PE

Both classes have PE sessions once a week.

  • Ladybird Class have PE on Tuesday
  • Butterfly Class have PE on Wednesday

Please can the children bring their PE kit in on these days: dark shorts, white T shirt and trainers or plimsolls. Don’t forget socks if your child is wearing tights to school!

Reading and Homework

Reading books will be changed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Please ensure that you read with your child every night and fill in the Reading Record Book with a short comment. Please return the reading book the following book change day, and we will swap it for the next one!

The children will also receive homework on Fridays, which will include handwriting or phonics practice or a simple maths activity that links to our learning from the week.

If you have any queries or questions about this year please come and see us.
